"Is it wrong for me to love my own? Is it wicked for me because my skin is red? Because I am Sioux? Because I was born where my father lived? Because I would die for my people and my country? God made me an Indian."
Quote from Chief Sitting Bull, Sioux Indian

This depiction is that of the great Hunkpapa Sioux Indian Chief Sitting Bull (Tatanka Iyotake) who lived from 1831 to 1890. He was born in what is now Grand River South Dakota and is remembered most as helping to defeat General George Armstrong Custer at the Little Bighorn in 1876. He was a spiritual leader, patriot, warrior, and a martyr. He was admired by the Sioux for his bravery, generosity, and his wisdom and kindness. But like many of his fellow Indian Chiefs as well as the entire Indian nations, his spirits were broken because of the many lies, betrayals, and humiliation by the white man and the US Government. He was killed by a party of Indian police, but he died long before as a result of the treatment of his people, the loss of his land, pride and dignity.
